Domain of Heroes

It might seem complete unnecessary at the end of the year, when all precious gaming time is already occupied by numerous AAA titles on every platform imaginable, but a small web MMORPG was (re-)launched yesterday, Domain of Heroes.

DoH has everything what makes an RPG great: lots of races, classes, quests, statistics and, of course, loot. The world is vast and there are lots of different places to go to. There are three big factions in the game which fight constantly over territory.

The game is mostly text based. There is a small map on which you can click to move all over the world, but that is about it. Everytime you move, you get a description of what you are seeing. This may seem like oldfashioned at first, but it still works as good as twenty years ago. In fact, it gives a real DnD feel, it is almost as if you have to roll the dice every turn.

What makes this game truly different, is that it is really simple to play. If you want to fight, you just go to a cavern and start fighting. From then on, the game does everything for you until you leave the area. From time to time, you have to check your inventory to see what you have picked up or assign a few points if you leveled up, but for the most part, it does everything automatically. The makers even say that the game is “simple enough to play while working”.

But it is clear that the game still has a lot of improvements to make. For starters, there aren’t enough quests. When you reach level 25, it is clear that there is not enough to do. There are some generic quests that keep coming up, but there is a lot of grinding involved if you want to advance in the main storyline.

Other improvements could be clearer instructions for quests. Sometimes, you only have a real vague description of the place where you have to go, making it tedious to look all over the place. Also, the world could be bigger and, of course, more loot, although there is already quite some good stuff to be found.

But all in all, a nice timewaster for those long dark evenings (or long workdays). Just bear in mind that this has a whole other audience than World of Warcraft and other large games. There are quite some fun hours to be had in the world of Dohria.
